Don was born and
raised in the Detroit area and subsequently attended elementary and
secondary schools within the City. After spending his time at Denby
High, he decided to join the Navy. W.W.II had begun and he felt the
need to contribute his services.
He spent the next two years on a supply ship in the Pacific theater of
operations as a signal man. I understand Don covered a good portion of
that waterway hopping from one island to another with supplies.
After
his Navy hitch he returned to Detroit and decided to continue his
education. He did so by spending a year at Cass Tech after which he
attended and graduated from the University of Detroit with a degree in
Business Economics.
He then
began a varied career which included work for and Insurance Company, a
munitions plant in salt Lake City and the Ford Motor Company. During
this time he increased his skills with computers.
Finally
he applied for a position with BCBSM in 1971 as a computer systems
analyst. He retired in 1988 as a senior administrator having written
all the operating manuals for the data processing functions.
So much
for the business life of Mr. Carter. Personally he found time to pursue
a few personal interests. First and foremost he met and married, Lois,
a charming and attractive young lady in 1956. They just recently
celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary. Otherwise he has been known
to spend considerable time on the golf course honing his skills at the
ripe young age of 80.
It was
his love of the grand old game, that spear headed his interest as a
member of the BCBSM Retiree Board to sponsor a Golf Outing for the
retirees and friends. And so it came to pass in 1991, with a little
help from his friends that the 1st Retiree Golf Outing was born.
When he
is not golfing Don enjoys bowling during the cold seasons. He is also
known for being rather verbose on a variety of subjects, but we can live
with that. We are glad he finally found his niche with BCBSM.
